One of the most interesting developments in gaming technology today, in my opinion, is Augmented Reality (AR). The opportunities that this technology gives to developers are limitless.

The easiest way is to define a virtual environment that combines or places a real environment on top of it to present the reality we call augmented reality.

A good example is Terminator 2, where Arnold Schwarzenegger, like Terminator, has an expanded vision where he can see the real world around him, but there are also various scans and data presented around real objects. Another example I have given in the past is that with augmented reality you can theoretically walk a busy street with real people and virtual Star Wars or Lord of the Rings characters by looking through shop windows or climbing lanterns.
AR is currently being extended because of its use in daily life. Imagine that you have a very busy lifestyle. With augmented reality, you can have a device built into the recipe that lets you go to work or catch the train while accessing your email and surfing the web, you can see it all through your glasses.
What I really care about, however, is if you apply Augmented Reality to the gaming enterprise. I recently wrote an article on the development of AR contact lenses. Imagine yourself as a gamer, going to the jungle, career, beach or just about anywhere alone or with friends and being able to play first-person shooters in a real environment with this AR lens.
